The Scratch Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children around the world learn coding and software development, empowering millions of young people to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and coding skills. shop.scratchfoundation.com is an online store where fans can purchase t-shirts, accessories, and merchandise, and even make donations to support the Foundation’s mission.

The Project
We partnered with the Scratch Foundation to design and build their new Shopify storefront, creating a seamless eCommerce experience that reflects the organization’s playful and creative brand. The Scratch Shop was the first of 3 new sites in a larger digital redesign, providing an engaging platform for supporters to purchase merchandise while maintaining consistency with the other digital properties still in development. Collaborating closely with Scratch’s design team, BlueSwitch developed a Shopify site that not only showcases their products but also supports future marketing initiatives and membership features.
The Challenges
Make the site feel and look similar to the new main Scratch Foundation site, still in development, working closely with their branding team to ensure consistency across all platforms.
Rebuild a donation-feature landing page separate from the Shopify ecommerce experience, with a goal of maintaining a consistent UX carried over from a previous donation platform.
Consult with 3rd party vendors and custom fulfillment solutions, with a Shopify Collective feature to power third-party product collaborations and curated marketplaces directly on the Shopify site.
Build a custom Klaviyo flow for the donation landing page to automatically send tax receipts to donors with dynamic donor-specific data and personalized thank-you messaging.
Build a dedicated Klaviyo flow for “on behalf of” donations, allowing donors to send customized messages to recipients when contributing in someone else’s name, with seamless payment processing through Shopify.
Our Solution
Next-level collaboration and planning
Because the Scratch Foundation was redesigning both their Shop and Foundation sites simultaneously, BlueSwitch worked in close partnership with their team to ensure consistent branding and a seamless user experience. Through a detailed discovery process, we identified opportunities for improvement—including a more intuitive homepage design, a customized header that mirrors the Foundation site, and enhancements to the donation experience. Careful planning and open communication allowed us to align site launches, coordinate release timelines, and prepare for future phases like memberships and integrated login flows.
Custom donation shopping experience
To reduce reliance on costly third-party donation platforms, Scratch turned to BlueSwitch for a custom-built solution within their Shopify storefront. We created a donation page that mirrors the look and feel of their existing system, ensuring consistency with the Foundation’s branding while delivering a more streamlined experience. By incorporating upsell opportunities directly into the cart and checkout flow, the new system makes it easy for supporters to contribute, while also helping Scratch maximize fundraising efforts without unnecessary platform fees.
Smart integrations and marketing support
Beyond the site build, BlueSwitch developed custom Klaviyo flows tailored to the donation experience, including automated tax receipts, personalized thank-you messages, and “on behalf of” notifications for gifts made in someone else’s name. We also provided marketing consultation, configuring the Shopify site for maximum visibility across marketing channels while preventing overlap with the main Scratch Foundation site. This holistic approach ensures that every touchpoint—from eCommerce to email—supports the Foundation’s mission and amplifies its reach.
